Visiting the area where the CAMP pilot was taking place not only gave us a chance to sit down with Dr. Kasaija, it was also a chance to get out into the field to see where and how human-wildlife conflict are happening around Hoima. As you know, conflict is one of the main motivations for CAMP, so this was a critical part of the expedition.

We met with the field operations team from CTU in Hoima and visited one of the forest monitoring sites. It made for a successful day of team work.
Photos in the gallery below show both activities.

CAMP Field Report: I felt so lucky to have the chance to meet some of the women who were about to start the CAMP training and their very own mushroom farms. Since I had met Margaret Mary, seen the classroom and had a run through on the training, I was also super excited for what was coming next for the women themselves.

Our meetup took place at Kyamaleera Wildlife Education Center (KWEC). The Center was built through a partnership between  Chimpanzee Trust Uganda and the local communities, which own and operate the center. After checking in with managers of the community association, CAMP stakeholders came together with questions, ideas, smiles and celebration.

Trying new things can be exciting but also a little intimidating. Participants in the pilot project would be feeling that push and pull dynamic later in the weekend. While at KWEC it was our turn listen and learn – not just about mushrooms. See for yourself in the video below.

Enjoy!

With compassion.

Doctor Deb

Hello, CAMPers!

Hope your week is off to a great start. I wanted to share some of the photos from my recent visit to Uganda so you could have an boots-on-the-ground view of how the project is going. I was brought to tears more than once to see the progress and potential. Thanks to everyone in the CAMP community for helping to make it happen. Here are some pics from the morning the whole thing started as we set out to drive from Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park.

CAMP photos from Uganda: Bonus video and the part that made me weep

While we were at MJS picking mushrooms and taking photos, Mukasa also shot a video. You’ll see I didn’t realize it at first; I was waiting for the flash, but when I finally caught on, I said a few impromptu (and somewhat awkward) words. Oh well. I hope you can tell from the look on my face that I was over-the-moon happy.

After the video was filmed, Nellie shared how happy she was to have the…
